There are many remarkable places around. The area is full of wonderful beaches to swim, cafes and restaurants to entertain yourself and archeological sites to visit.
Let’s have a look at all the choices that Corinth offers!
Stop 1: Ancient Corinth
The city of Corinth was built approximately at 700 BC, and ever since, it has been rebuilt several times.
It was a wealthy city due to the trade, with significant cultural growth. The sites you can visit at Ancient Corinth are numerous and the most important of them are:
- Temple of Apollo and Peribolos of Apollo
- Agora, Stoa and the Saint Paul Bema
- Mythical Lower Peirine fountain
- Ancient theatre, Odeion and the Roman theatre
Furthermore, Ancient Corinth is famous for the epistoles of Apostol Paul (and the famous Hymn of Love which is included in the first letter to the Corinthians).
You can also visit the Acrocorinth stone, the acropolis, which is located only 3,5 kilometers away. It is one of the most beautiful acropolis of Greece, so it is a must if you are in the area!
And guess what you need to have an easy access…. A rental car!
Stop 2: Exprole the blue lagoon of Vouliagmeni and the sanctuary of Hera
The next spot we suggest you should explore is the magical Blue Lagoon of Vouliagmeni at Perachora.
Its depth is less than 40 meters, its length about 2 kilometers and its width about one kilometer. The lake communicates with the Corinthian gulf through a canal.
The entire lakeside road is ideal for biking with the Gerania Mountains surrounding you. You can also enjoy water sports and maybe have a snack or a coffee admiring a heavenly landscape.
Heraion was a sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess Hera. It is located in a small bay at the end of the peninsula of Perachora. The temple of Hera is the most significant monument of the site. It lies near a small harbor under the lighthouse of Melagavi.
The region was an important part of the Corinthian land during the early roman period. Many findings in Perachora provide valuable information on Corinthian art from the geometric and archaic period. The ruins coupled with the view make this a can’t miss destination.
The Melagavi Lighthouse, also known as Heraion lighthouse, was built in 1897 on the Agrilaos peninsula, in the golf of Alkyonides Islands. It is one of the 10 most beautiful lighthouses in entire Greece and it is also one of the most photographed landmarks by travelers with thousands of captures on Social Media.
The Melagavi Lighthouse constitutes a particularly remarkable architectural construction, thus has been listed as a monument by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism since 2001.
Stop 3: Swim at the magical waters of Mylokopi
This hidden beach is a real paradise!
Blue waters, sandy beach and pine trees! The trurh is that it is not easily approachable, so you will need a 4×4 car. You will also have to walk to find it but it’s worth the effort!
Stop 4: Dine at the graphic village of Pisia
Pisia is a small beautiful village hidden in the woods at the Gerania Mountains, near Loutraki City.
The scenery is ideal for walks or biking in the forest (altitude of 650 meters) or to have your meal at one of the several graphic, traditional taverns of the village.
The altitude is 650 meters, so you may need a jacket even in the summer!
Stop 5: Relax yourself at Loutraki spa
After all stops, you will surely need a coffee and some relaxation before your last stop and Loutraki can offer you exactly this.
The thermal springs at Loutraki Spa are a nourishing experience for your body and soul. There are also numerous cafes at the beach that you can enjoy coffee and drinks later.
Stop 6: Final stop at Diolkos & the Corinth Canal
Peloponnese connects with Central Greece by Isthmus, the Corinthian Canal.
Isthmus is a mechanical achievement probably designed by Periander the Tyrant of Corinth, but was constructed 25 centuries further. The view of Isthmus is breathtaking and if you are a fan of extreme sports, you can budgy jump from the bridge.
For those that are more romantic, cruises that sail through the Isthmus are also available.
Last but not least, we advise you to visit Diolkos which is dated at the era of Periander the Tyrant. Diolkos was a limestone track way that was used to transport boats across the land. Through Diolkos, ships avoided to travel around the Peloponnese, cutting down their trip to the minimum of 6.4 km on land.
